New Comment Moderation Policy: Fuck this shit

Tonight, I have altered my rather liberal policy re: comments. I have made edits removing personal insults from comments made. I have not approved one comment that I deemed abusive and misogynist. So yeah, you, you know who you are.

I would really like to know who these comments serve. Who wins in a game where we call each other hurtful names until someone stops speaking her truth?

I only quote things here that I think are worth thinking about, whether I agree or disagree. And really, my opinions are irrelevant. I write and blog to learn. I engage other people in conversation because that is how I have learned what I know now and how I will have learned what I know tomorrow.

I do not quote people in order to make them a target for people with really poor manners. My new moderation policy is FUCK THIS SHIT. I used to not care, really, when people made hurtful comments, because they were mostly about me and hey, you know what? I used to moderate a political discussion forum. I work with the general public. I’m good. You’re not going to get to me. But I am not putting other people in the line of fire just because their opinions are interesting to me and because other people were plainly raised in barns.

If you think I took this move lightly, consider this. I believe in non-censorship as one of my primary truths. I believe you give someone enough rope, they’ll hang themselves. The solution to bad speech is more speech. I don’t believe in banning any kind of speech. But fuck this, you people are not using my blog to insult people.

Go ahead, have a go at me. But if you make this a not safe place for people to talk about things that are real to them, fuck off. Seriously. This is a hobby blog and I don’t give a shit about the hits or pageviews or anything. I like having smart people with something to say discuss interesting things. Insults do not play into that.

  1. I think sometimes we get caught up in the narcissism of our own arguments and forget there there are actual people on the other side of these comments.

No fight to be fought, DG. Your blog, your integrity, your rules. All good.

  2. Can I say how happy I am that most comments have been going into that post and not my personal blog? You rock. Forever a gold star from me.

I appreciate it. As I’ve appreciated my discussions with you.

  3. Good for you! Accusations of censorship due to moderation policies are ridiculous, and they’re unfortunately something I became very familiar with at Bitch. I wish people would check up on what “freedom of speech” does and doesn’t entail. There is absolutely no reason why you should allow name-calling and personal attacks.

Tiger Beatdown has posted some great pieces about this: http://tigerbeatdown.com/2011/12/08/the-troll-is-dead-foxnewsification-and-the-notion-that-all-points-of-view-are-valuable/ and http://tigerbeatdown.com/2011/12/19/4277/ to start.

  4. Had a read of one of those. To be honest, I still think a lot of places over-moderate. That said, I love the Gawker sites comment moderation model. It’s neat, and it works.

I don’t mind people getting a little “rhetorical” and perhaps a bit over-excited and saying stupid things. That will always be part of debate. But yeah, insubstantial arguments with nothing but name-calling? Not happening.

DG is not going go to be a strictly “safe” space either. It’s a place to talk about Glee. I have blogs that are “safe spaces” and the comments have always been heavily moderated as a result. Not happening here, mostly because I enjoy a good argument.

I am going to write up an actual moderation policy soon. It’s about time!

  5. I absolutely appreciate your personal hobby blog, mostly because I haven’t read one comment that hasn’t been abusive or veered so off topic that it makes me scratch my head about the commentor. Your articles are awesome and your commentors too. It’s wonderful to find a collective of level-headed, smart and articulate people who wanna chat Glee.
