Transbigotry and Glee: Ryan Murphy

Silly Gleek linked to a fantastic interview with Dot Marie Jones who plays Coach Shannon Beiste. While the interview also showed us how incredibly funny and cool the actress is, it also brought up some very interesting stuff about Ryan Murphy’s past addressing trans issues.

I know there has been a lot of discussion about the portrayal of trans characters in his show Nip/Tuck but I honestly don’t know enough about the show to comment.

The other show he produced a pilot for (but wasn’t picked up) was called Pretty/Handsome and was a show about trans people. In fact, Dot Marie Jones was cast as a female to male transsexual and she says about the experience:

…the most amazing thing I’ve ever done.

Am I the only one who would love to see the pilot and/or hear a lot more about it?

Because really, the things that have been the most disturbing in Glee from a trans perspective (from what I can tell, as an ally and from reading trans perspectives) have been Mike saying the word “Tranny”, Sue saying “shemale” (although, as the show villain, what she says can almost always be taken as bad) and the absence of any trans characters in the show. But if Ryan Murphy is so au fait with the subject, why has this not been addressed in the show?

Has he ever been interviewed on the subject?
