When Will Glee Stop Ignoring Race?

I realize the implications of Mercedes performing the closing number with “Black” emblazoned on her shirt. I’m not suggesting that…or maybe I am. I suppose I’m saying that in an episode where the main characters are exploring the things that make them different, having the only black girl NOT mention what anyone who has ever lived through the same situation knows damn well would likely be a way bigger insecurity than hairstyling seems a cowardly and clueless move from writers who have been smart and aggressive about tackling other topics.

One of the things that bothered me in last week’s Born This Way episode was that we got zero explaination for Mercedes’ shirt.

I mean, I vaguely know what a weave is. And I want to hear Mercedes’ Born This Way story.

  1. Frankly, it would be nice to get more of Mercedes’ story in general.
Re: race – seems to me that being black in a midwest small town is still a story worth telling in this day & age. (I’m not familiar with Lima specifically.)

  2. I have to say, I’m not a huge Mercedes fan — she kind of lost me altogether when she guilted Kurt into going to church with her. However, it just seemed odd we didn’t get any kind of story with her in BTW.
